Change the Climate

Posted by

Today and tomorrow, several US governors and world leaders are coming together to talk about creative solutions to the climate crisis.

Oxfam America’s Vice President for Policy and Communications Jim Lyons spoke at the Governors’ Global Climate Summit in Los Angeles. He introduced a clip from, “Sisters on the Planet,” our educational video about how poor women are disproportionately affected by the consequences of climate change.

“We are confronted with enormous challenges. We must help people adapt to the new climate reality by building climate resilience while at the same time working to reduce the prospects of further damage and destruction by reducing our own green house gas emissions. We can and we want to do both,” Lyons said.

President-Elect Obama addressed the summit via taped remarks.

“Investing in clean technologies, improving energy efficiency, finding ways to capture and store carbon, and reducing the risks of future disasters can produce new ‘green’ jobs in the United States and new global markets to help steer developing countries on a more sustainable low carbon, climate resilient pathway.”

Lyons’ remarks came near the opening of the summit, after those delivered by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and taped remarks by President-Elect Barack Obama.
